Trip Overview

Naar and Phu Trekking is an extraordinary and culturally rich adventure in the remote Naar-Phu Valley, nestled within the Annapurna region of Nepal. This trek offers a rare glimpse into the lives of Tibetan-influenced villages and their untouched traditions, combined with breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. Opened to trekkers only in 2002, the Naar and Phu valleys are situated to the north of the Annapurna Circuit trail, near the Tibetan border, and remain one of the least traveled routes in Nepal.

The trek takes you through the barren and dramatic landscapes of the Upper Manang region, crossing high-altitude passes such as the Kang La Pass (5,320m). It’s a great choice for those who wish to explore hidden valleys, medieval villages, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and stunning mountain views, including Annapurna II (7,937m), Gangapurna (7,455m), Tilicho Peak (7,134m), and the distant Tibetan plateau. This trek offers an exceptional experience for those looking to escape the more crowded trekking routes, such as the Annapurna Circuit. The journey takes you through narrow canyons, beautiful alpine landscapes, high-altitude passes, and centuries-old monasteries. Additionally, trekkers can enjoy stunning views of Annapurna II (7,937m), Gangapurna (7,455m), and other high peaks of the Annapurna range.

Package Highlights:

  • Naar and Phu Villages: Phu Village (4,080m) and Naar Village (4,110m) are traditional Tibetan settlements offering a glimpse into life in the high Himalayas. These villages retain their centuries-old customs and have a distinctly Tibetan Buddhist culture.
  • Kang La Pass (5,320m): This high-altitude pass offers spectacular panoramic views of the Annapurna, Gangapurna, and Tilicho peaks. It is one of the most exhilarating points of the trek.
  • Tashi Lhakhang Monastery: One of the most sacred and ancient Buddhist monasteries in the region, located in Phu Village. This gompa holds great cultural and religious significance for the local community.
  • Cultural Immersion: Trekking through the Naar-Phu Valley gives you the unique opportunity to engage with the Tibetan-origin people who have lived here for centuries, experiencing their unspoiled lifestyle, festivals, and rituals.
  • Pristine Wilderness: The valleys are part of the Annapurna Conservation Area, rich in flora and fauna. You might spot the elusive snow leopard, blue sheep, and various birds.
  • Off-the-Beaten-Path Experience: Unlike the crowded Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp treks, Naar and Phu Trek offers solitude and the chance to experience a trek in a truly remote Himalayan setting.

A long scenic drive via Besisahar brings you to Jagat, the starting point of the trek.

Begin the trek following the Marsyangdi River, passing through terraced fields and forests, reaching Dharapani, a village on the Annapurna Circuit trail.

The trail climbs through pine forests and past villages inhabited by people of Tibetan origin, reaching Koto, the gateway to the Naar-Phu Valley.

Enter the Naar-Phu Valley and trek through dense forests, crossing suspension bridges and small settlements. The landscape gradually becomes more barren and rugged as you approach Meta.

A day of exploring the beautiful Phu Valley, with its high-altitude desert-like terrain, ancient monasteries, and Tibetan culture. The trek continues towards Phu Gaon, a traditional village perched high above the river valley.

Spend the day acclimatizing and exploring Phu Gaon. Visit the Tashi Lhakhang Monastery, explore the narrow alleyways of the village, and interact with the local inhabitants to learn about their way of life.

Descend from Phu and head toward Naar Village, crossing high ridges and experiencing panoramic views of the Annapurna range. Naar is another traditional settlement where trekkers can immerse themselves in the local way of life.

The trek's most challenging day, crossing the high Kang La Pass. From the pass, the views of the Annapurna range are spectacular. After crossing the pass, descend to the Annapurna Circuit trail and reach the village of Ngawal.

A relatively easy trek to the famous village of Manang. This area is part of the classic Annapurna Circuit and is known for its unique culture, natural beauty, and views of the Himalayas.

For trekkers with extra time, a side trip to Tilicho Lake, one of the world’s highest lakes, can be added. This is an incredible high-altitude adventure with stunning scenery.

Ascend gradually through alpine landscapes and reach Yak Kharka, a popular stop on the way to Thorong La Pass.

Trekking at high altitude, the route takes you to the base camp of Thorong La Pass. The barren and rugged terrain contrasts beautifully with the distant peaks.

Cross the Thorong La Pass, one of the highest trekking passes in the world. After the challenging ascent, enjoy stunning mountain views before descending to the sacred site of Muktinath.
